Sony WH-1000XM5 vs. Bose 700 Headphones

The Sony WH-1000XM5 was released on 20th May 2022 for $399, while the Bose 700 was released on 30th June 2019 for $400. The prices make it seem that the two headphones have similar features, but that is not the case. Keep reading the article for a detailed comparison.

Design

The Sony WH-1000XM5’s design differs from the XM4s; a single-hinge replaces the double-hinged headband with a swivel and rocker design, allowing the earcups to move outwards; the headband can also twist and turn without snapping. XM5s weigh less and are more comfortable than the XM4s.

The Sony WH-1000XM5s come in two color options, Black and Silver, with clean matt finishes.

The Bose 700’s design is modern. The earcups can pivot and slide up and down to adjust depending on the user’s head. The top side of the headband has a metal finish, and the underside is covered with silicon material for comfort.

These headphones come in Black, Luxe, Soapstone, Silver, and Triple midnight color options.

Sound Quality

The Sony WH-1000XM5 has a more refined and cleaner sound quality than the older XM4, with the ANC. It also has more balance in its sound quality than XM4, but it depends on the user's personal preference. If someone likes more bass, they will prefer the XM4; otherwise, they can go for the XM5.

The Bose 700 has refined sound quality with the ANC and less bass. Again it is about the user’s preference.

Mic Quality

The Sony WH-1000XM5’s mic quality is very nice. The microphone is clear and can even be compared to Apple Airpods Max.

The mic quality on the Bose 700 is also superb. It does a good job of blocking background noises and making the sound clear.

Touch Controls

The Sony WH-1000XM5’s touch controls are simple. The front of right earcups have pause/play controls, volume adjustment, and Track-changing controls where users can swipe forward to play the next track, backward to play the previous track, and long-press to activate voice assistant. The right side also has the call controls.

Bose 700

Left earcups have AC/NMB, Bluetooth, and power buttons. The power button can be pressed to check battery life.

The Bose 700’s touch controls are; The right earcup has Bluetooth and voice assistant buttons. The front of the right earcups can be swiped for volume adjustments, pause/play controls, and the right earcups can be pressed to check battery life.

The left earcups have the Noise control button.

App Controls

The Sony headphone app is available for both android and IOS. Users can use the app for many customizations, such as the level of noise cancelation and EQ.

The Bose headphone app is also available for both android and IOS. The Bose app is similar to the Sony app, where users can customize transparency and EQ.

Transparency Mode

The Sony WH-1000XM5’s transparency mode is a great improvement over the XM4s, but it is not as good as Apple’s Airpods Max.


The Bose 700’s transparency mode is also up to the mark with the Sony WH-1000XM5.

Battery Life

The Sony WH-1000XM5 has a battery life of thirty hours, whereas on the other hand, Bose 700 has a battery life of twenty hours which is significantly less than that of the Sony WH-1000XM5.
