How to Replace AirPods Max Headband | CentralSound

Your AirPods Max headband is cracked, torn, or wearing out — but that doesn’t mean it’s time for a new pair. This guide walks you through every step of replacing the headband part using a replacement from CentralSound, so you can restore your headphones and get back to the music.

⚠ Important: Verify Your AirPods Max Are Authentic Before Repairing

Counterfeit AirPods Max are common — especially in the secondhand market. Replacement parts are designed and sized for genuine Apple hardware. If your headphones are not authentic, parts may not fit correctly and the repair may not work as expected. Take a moment to confirm authenticity before ordering.

How to Tell If Your AirPods Max Are Authentic

Use these checks to confirm you have a genuine pair before starting your repair.

1. Verify the Serial Number with Apple

This is the most reliable method. Remove the left ear cushion (it pulls off magnetically) and look just above the speaker driver — the serial number is printed on the headphone frame. Then visit checkcoverage.apple.com and enter the number. Authentic AirPods Max will show a valid purchase date and coverage status. Fakes either return no result or an “invalid serial” error.

2. Pair to an iPhone

Bring the AirPods Max near an iPhone and open the case or initiate pairing. Genuine AirPods Max trigger a seamless pairing animation. If a “Cannot Verify AirPods” dialog appears, or pairing only works through Bluetooth settings like a generic device, they are almost certainly counterfeit.

3. Check the Digital Crown and Noise Control Button

On authentic AirPods Max, the Digital Crown turns smoothly with precise, fine grooves and a satisfying tactile feel. The Noise Control button presses quietly and cleanly. Counterfeits typically have thicker, coarser grooves that turn stiffly or click loudly, and buttons that feel loose or mushy.

4. Inspect the Ear Cushions

Authentic AirPods Max ear cushions feel soft, breathable, and evenly finished with no creases or misshapen edges. Counterfeit versions typically have poorly made cushions with visible creases, uneven shapes, or materials that feel rough or cheap. Genuine ear cups also have a small pinhole inside for headband removal — many fakes are missing this entirely.

5. Check the Screw Heads Inside the Ear Cups

Remove the magnetic ear cushion and look at the screws securing the speaker housing. On authentic AirPods Max, these are Pentalobe or Torx screws that sit completely flush with the housing. Counterfeits typically use Phillips-head screws that are visibly raised or protruding. This is one of the clearest tell-tale signs — Apple does not use Phillips screws here.

6. Look at Build Quality Overall

Authentic AirPods Max are built to premium Apple standards — no visible gaps, no misaligned parts, no rough edges. The aluminum ear cups feel solid and consistent. If anything about the fit, finish, or weight feels off, trust your instincts. Counterfeit versions sometimes add internal weight to mimic the heft of genuine hardware, so unusually heavy ear cups can also be a red flag.

7. Check for Apple-Exclusive Features

Genuine AirPods Max support Find My, automatic ear detection, Spatial Audio, and seamless device switching across your Apple devices. If these features are missing or unavailable after pairing, that is a strong indicator the headphones are not authentic.

Watch the Full Repair Video

Before you begin, watch our complete step-by-step repair video from start to finish. It covers the entire process including any fitment details and alignment steps you’ll need to know. Skipping ahead can mean missing a critical step — so watch the whole thing through at least once before picking up any tools.

What You’ll Need

This repair requires no special tools and takes just a few minutes:

  • Compatible AirPods Max headband replacement part (linked below)
  • SIM ejector pin tool — included with your replacement headband
  • Clean, flat work surface

Heads up: When reconnecting the headband arms, insert the connector piece into the hole and twist gently until you feel it lock into place. Don’t force it — if it doesn’t lock smoothly, back it out and try again. Watch the full video before starting so you know exactly what to expect.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 — Remove the Ear Pad

The AirPods Max ear pads attach magnetically and pull straight off. No tools needed — just grasp the pad and pull gently away from the ear cup. Set it aside safely. Repeat on the other side.

Step 2 — Use the Ejector Pin to Release the Headband Connector

With the ear pad removed, locate the small release hole on the ear cup where the headband arm connects. Take the SIM ejector pin tool (included with your replacement headband) and insert it straight into that hole. There’s a small button inside — press and hold it down while simultaneously pulling the headband connector piece out. The connector will release from the headband arm. Repeat on the other side.

Step 3 — Remove the Old Headband

Once both connectors are released, the old headband part lifts away freely. Set it aside.

Step 4 — Connect the New Headband (First Side)

Take your new replacement headband and insert the connector piece on one end into the hole on the ear cup arm. Twist it gently until you feel and hear it lock into place. It should feel solid with no wobble.

Step 5 — Connect the New Headband (Second Side)

Repeat the same process on the other side — insert the connector into the hole and twist until it locks. Both sides should feel equally secure.

Step 6 — Reattach the Ear Pads & You’re Done

Snap the magnetic ear pads back onto both ear cups. Your headband is replaced. That’s it — no screws, no glue, no special skills required.
