What Is the Garrett Z-Lynk System?

Before diving into ear pad replacement, it helps to understand what makes the Garrett Z-Lynk system special — and why protecting it matters.

Garrett's Z-Lynk wireless technology was a game changer for the metal detecting world. Traditional Bluetooth headphones suffer from audio delay — sometimes as much as 100 milliseconds or more — which means the signal from your coil reaches your ears a fraction of a second after it should. The Z-Lynk system delivers near-zero latency at just 17 milliseconds, making it six times faster than standard Bluetooth.

The system operates on 2.4 GHz frequency-hopping technology and is designed to work with virtually any metal detector on the market via either a 1/4" headphone jack or the Garrett AT-style 2-pin connector. It's a premium piece of kit — and like all premium gear, it deserves proper maintenance.

Why Ear Cushions Wear Out — Especially in the Field

Metal detecting is not a controlled environment hobby. You're out in summer heat, autumn rain, and everything in between — sweating on beach hunts, hiking through fields, putting in 4, 6, sometimes 8-hour sessions. Your ear pads absorb every bit of that.

Sweat and Moisture Degradation

The foam and surface material in headset ear pads are porous by design. Over time, moisture breaks down the internal foam structure, causing it to lose its spring and flatten permanently. Most ear pads reach this point within 12 to 24 months of regular use.

Acoustic Seal Degradation

Your ear pads create the acoustic seal that delivers clean, clear audio from your detector's target signals. When pads flatten, that seal degrades. Background noise bleeds in more easily, and the distance between the driver and your eardrum changes — making it harder to distinguish faint signals at depth.

⚠️ Signs it's time to replace: Flattened foam that no longer bounces back, cracking or peeling surface material, persistent odor, reduced sound isolation, or discomfort during sessions that used to feel comfortable.

Three Material Options

🧊 Cooling Gel

Our most popular option for warm-weather hunting. Features a cooling gel layer beneath a moisture-wicking surface with memory foam base. Best for beach, field, or desert hunting in summer months.

☁️ Ultra Plush

The softest option — extremely plush surface over memory foam. Best for all-day comfort, especially in cooler conditions or indoor detecting.

🎸 Protein Leather

Soft, durable PU leather over memory foam. Easy to wipe clean, holds up well against light moisture. The classic choice for easy maintenance.

Installation: No Tools Required

  1. Grip the old ear pad firmly near the seam where it meets the ear cup
  2. Pull gently but firmly — the pad is attached via a press-fit groove
  3. Work your way around the perimeter until the old pad releases
  4. Clean the ear cup surface before installing the new pad
  5. Align the new CentralSound pad with the ear cup groove
  6. Press firmly and evenly around the perimeter until it snaps securely into place
