Check your phone or computer

If your headphones are wireless, connect them to a device. Your phone, the brand’s app or your computer usually shows the exact model name.

Any Bluetooth headphones Connect them to your phone or computer and open its Bluetooth settings. The device name shown is usually the model, for example “WH-1000XM4” or “Bose QC35 II”.
iPhone or iPad (AirPods, Beats) Open Settings and tap your headphones’ name near the top. The model name and model number are listed there.
Mac (AirPods, Beats) Apple menu → System Settings → click your headphones’ name in the sidebar.
Android (Beats) Open the Beats app, tap the menu, then tap My Beats.
Sony Open the Sony | Sound Connect app (formerly Headphones Connect). It shows the model of your connected headphones.
Bose Open the Bose app (formerly Bose Music). Older models like the QC35, QC30 and SoundSport Free use the Bose Connect app.
Gaming headsets Plug in or connect to your PC and open the brand’s software: Corsair iCUE, SteelSeries GG, Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse or HyperX NGENUITY.
Office headsets Open Jabra Direct or Jabra Sound+ for Jabra, or Poly Lens for Plantronics / Poly.

Bose Quick ID

Bose labels usually show only a serial number, not the model name.

Try this first: Wireless Bose? Connect them to your phone. The Bluetooth name usually shows the model (for example “Bose QC35 II” or “Bose QC45”), and the Bose app or Bose Connect app shows it too. Wired or won’t connect? Use the steps below.

Step 1: Is there a AAA battery door on one ear cup?

  • Yes, and the headphones fold inward → QC25
  • Yes, cups only swivel flat, with small mic holes on the outside of each cup → QC15
  • Yes, cups only swivel flat, no mic holes → QC2

QC2 and QC15 use the same CentralSound parts. If there’s no battery door, go to Step 2.

Step 2: What charging port does it have?

QC35 and QC35 II use the same parts. QC Ultra 1st and 2nd Gen use the same ear pads (2nd Gen has shinier, polished metal arms).

Bose Aviation Quick ID

Plug type (dual plug, 6-pin LEMO, 5-pin XLR or helicopter) doesn’t tell you the model. Look at these instead:

Step 1: Look at the top headband pad

  • Sheepskin / faux fur pad held on with Velcro → A20
  • Contoured fabric or foam pad, and the center spring is fully covered → A30
  • Removable cushion on a magnesium band, serial number underneath it → Aviation Headset X (A10)

Step 2: Look at the control box on the cable

  • AUX audio jack and a Mute / Mix / Off switch (Bluetooth button on some) → A20
  • High / Medium / Low noise-cancelling slider and separate Bluetooth volume → A30
  • Simple box with no AUX jack, no Mute / Mix / Off switch and no Bluetooth → Aviation Headset X (A10)

Bluetooth versions also show their name (for example “Bose A20”) on your phone.

Step 3: Try the ear cups and the mic boom

  • Double-tap an ear cup turns off noise cancelling on that side (talk-through) → A30
  • Mic boom clips off and swaps sides without tools → A30
  • Mic boom is held on with screws → A20 or A10

Parts tip: the A10 and A20 share CentralSound ear cushions. The A30 uses its own cushions and no A20 parts fit it.

How to Find Your Headphone Model

Method 1: Your phone, computer or app. For wireless headphones this is the fastest and most reliable way. See how for each brand.

Method 2: The label. Here’s where each brand prints it:

  • Sony headphones: Printed on the headband or inside the head padding (sometimes on the headband slider). Codes starting "YY" are internal; use the WH- name for support/parts.
  • Sony earbuds: On the bottom, inside, or back of the charging case.
  • Bose headphones: Easiest is to connect wireless models to your phone (Bluetooth name or the Bose app / Bose Connect app shows the model). The label inside the ear cup is mostly a serial number and usually does not name the model, so otherwise identify by features: power source, charging port, buttons and headband (see the Bose quick ID steps).
  • Bose on-ear: The label is mostly a serial number and usually does not name the model. Identify by features: power source, charging port and buttons (see the Bose quick ID steps).
  • Bose earbuds: The codes on the bud are serial codes, not model names. Identify by shape: wired with battery module (QC20), neckband (QC30/Hearphones), or true wireless with case (SoundSport Free, QC Earbuds).
  • Beats headphones: Model number (A#### or B####) printed on the underside of the headband, near the hinge or slider; also on the box.
  • Apple AirPods Max: Model number (A2096 / A3184 / A3454) printed inside the ear cup under the magnetic ear cushion.
  • Gaming headsets (Corsair, HyperX, SteelSeries, Logitech, Razer): Sticker/label inside the headband, under an ear cushion, or on the headband slider; wireless models also print the model on the USB dongle and box.
  • Office headsets (Plantronics/Poly, Jabra): Label inside the headband, on the ear cup under the cushion, or on the USB dongle/base station.

Commonly Confused Headphone Models

How do I tell Sony WH-1000XM3 from WH-1000XM4?
Look at the button on the left ear cup. The XM3 says NC/AMBIENT and the XM4 says CUSTOM. The XM4 also has a small wear sensor inside the left ear cup.

How do I tell Sony WH-1000XM5 from WH-1000XM6?
The XM6 folds on hinges and has a round, recessed power button. The XM5 does not fold (the cups only swivel flat) and has a small rectangular power button.

How do I tell Sony WH-1000XM2 from WH-1000XM3?
The XM2 charges with micro-USB. The XM3 charges with USB-C and has a thicker padded headband.

How do I tell Bose QC35 from QC35 II?
The QC35 II has an extra Action button on the left ear cup. Otherwise they look the same and use the same ear pads, headband pad and battery.

How do I tell Bose QC35 II from QC45?
The QC45 charges with USB-C. The QC35 II charges with micro-USB. Their ear pads are different.

How do I tell Bose QC Ultra 1st Gen from 2nd Gen?
The 2nd Gen has shinier polished metal yokes and supports wired listening over USB-C. CentralSound QC Ultra ear pads fit both.

How do I tell Beats Studio3 from Beats Studio Pro?
The Studio3 charges with micro-USB. The Studio Pro charges with USB-C and has a matte finish. Parts are not interchangeable.

How do I tell Beats Solo3 from Solo 4?
The Solo 4 charges with USB-C and the Solo3 with micro-USB. Ear pads are different, but the CentralSound battery kit fits Solo 2, 3 and 4.

How do I tell AirPods Max (USB-C) from AirPods Max 2?
They look identical. Remove the magnetic ear cushion and read the model number inside the cup: A3184 is AirPods Max (USB-C) and A3454 is AirPods Max 2. For parts it does not matter: all AirPods Max versions (Lightning, USB-C and AirPods Max 2) use the same CentralSound ear cushions, headband and battery.

What is the easiest way to find my headphone model?
If your headphones are wireless, connect them to your phone or computer. The Bluetooth device name usually shows the model, and on iPhone you can tap the headphones in Settings to see the model name and number. Brand apps like Sony | Sound Connect, the Bose app, the Beats app, Corsair iCUE and Logitech G HUB also show the exact model.

How do I find out what model headphones I have?
Check the label first. Most brands print the model number inside the headband, under an ear cushion, or on the charging case for earbuds. Then search that number in the finder above to confirm the model and see matching parts.

Where is the model number on Sony headphones?
On Sony over-ear headphones it is printed on the headband or inside the head padding. On Sony earbuds it is on the bottom, inside or back of the charging case. Some labels also show a code starting with YY; use the name starting with WH or WF when shopping for parts.

How do I identify my Bose headphones?
The label inside Bose ear cups is mostly a serial number and usually does not name the model, so identify Bose by features. A AAA battery door means QC2, QC15 or QC25. Micro-USB charging with a power slide switch means QC35 (an extra Action button on the left cup means QC35 II). USB-C with a one-piece steel band means Bose 700; USB-C with metal yokes and a touch volume strip means QC Ultra; USB-C with a QC35-style shape means QC45 or QuietComfort Headphones.

Where is the model number on AirPods Max?
Remove the magnetic ear cushion. The model number (A2096, A3184 or A3454) is printed inside the ear cup.
