Step-by-Step: How to Replace the Sony MDR-1000X / WH-1000XM2 Side Cover Sliders
Step 1: Unpack the kit
Lay out the inner and outer side cover parts and the tools. Work on one side at a time so you can look at the other side as a reference.
Step 2: Pry off the outer cover
Slide the headband out and work a plastic pick or pry tool under the edge of the outer side cover, near the ear cup. Work along the cover until it comes off.
Tip: Go slowly around the wire. It runs along the headband slider and you don’t want to pinch or pull it.
Step 3: Remove the screws and broken parts
With the cover off you’ll see the metal headband bracket and its small screws. Remove the screws with the included screwdriver and take off any broken plastic pieces. Keep the screws.
Step 4: Fit the new inner piece
Set the new inner side cover piece over the bracket, keeping the wire in its channel. Line up the screw holes and put the screws back in until they’re snug.
Step 5: Snap on the new outer cover
Line up the new outer cover with the inner piece and press it on, working along its full length until it’s seated all the way.
Tip: Don’t over-tighten the screws. The parts only need to be snug.
Step 6: Repeat and test
Do the same on the other side. Then slide the headband in and out and fold the ear cups to check that everything moves freely.

The side covers take stress every time you adjust the headband or fold the ear cups. Over time the thin plastic cracks near the slider and the pieces come apart. It’s a common wear point on this model.
Our kit is designed and made in the USA from strong, flexible PA-Nylon 12, and it’s backed by a lifetime warranty. The parts are black and won’t match the color of the original Sony parts.
